Why is education so important? Or not... What do you think?

Why is education so important?

Education is one of the most sacred things that we have. It’s the fundament of every society and everybody in developed countries gets to be educated. But what is education? How do you define it? I believe that education and knowledge is two very different things. Education is for example school, where it is a structural education: they have set up a plan for what you are going to learn and when, and they don’t allow you to think so much outside the box. In school you are put in line, you get grades and you have to approach a lot of people in different ways, which is education, but also knowledge in itself. I think that it can be another way to educate yourself, and therefore get knowledge, something else than school, but it can be hard to break out of this already established system now that it is so deeply ingrained in the society. I agree that we need school in one way, but I also think that it should be an alternative to this rigid institution. For example getting knowledge on your own for a period of time, an then in the end have some kind of big exam (both theoretic and practical) to see if you really know what you are talking about

Knowledge is getting information and know how to use it, knowledge also is knowing how to get information, and using it for what it’s worth. Knowledge is also the ability to make up your own ideas and opinions based on what you have heard, seen, read or already know.

Education is so important because we need to learn things in order to work in the society. I we don’t know anything, then how are we going to be able to discuss themes or actually do something. For example if you want to be a doctor, you have to know how the body works, where the different things in the body are located and how they work together, but most importantly: what you must do if something doesn’t work the proper way. You can’t just stand there as a doctor not knowing what to do if somebody is dying in front of you, of course you CAN, but then you wouldn’t be doing your job.

Also, education is important because the children and the young people that go to school are going to be the new generation that builds the country. We have to make sure that the people who are the future know the most basic things about how the world goes around, and how we can improve it. I think that we need to have more about ethics in school too, because too many people in this world rely on dogmatic beliefs when it comes to ethics and moral, so we actually have to learn children how to think individually too!

Maybe we don’t need school, but we need to educate ourselves and get new knowledge. School is just a place where many people learn things together, but do we really need it? If we actually want to learn something, then we can achieve it without school. We can read books or articles, discuss with people, and make up our own opinions, and that’s a good way to educate yourself. I must admit that I have learned a lot from school, things like writing, and analyzing, but I’m pretty sure that I could have learned that myself if I really wanted to. You know, school is just a place where you learn and get help to learn, but in the end it’s you that do all the work, the teachers can’t insert a memory card with information into your brain, you have to read and understand it for yourself.

All my life I have searched for knowledge, not education, but knowledge. Whenever I see a book that seems interesting, I just have to read it, and I always search for new challenges when it comes to reading things. I think that every child has a natural hunger after knowledge, and that every child whatever background really likes learning things. Just look at a your closest 4-yearold, doesn’t it ask many questions? This is because of its natural hunger after knowledge, but what happens then? When children are about to start at school they are very excited to begin there and have a good time, but after a while they get tired of school. I think this is because school oppress their individuality, just think if a class of children get to choose what to read or learn, each individual would like to read whatever they want, something that fits to them, but if a teacher choose for them, they can’t express their individuality in that way. I think that school have to focus more on each person’s individuality and adapt the schoolsystem to that, or else the children will become much of the same, and get pretty much the same opinions. I really think that one of my friends t-shirts really have a deep meaning, it says “I was born intelligent, education ruined me”. I think it can be explained like this: I was born with an open-mind, always hungering and searching for knowledge, but when I got to school, they teached me how to think like the masses, I can’t express my individuality, and if I do, I get punished for it.

In the end I think that school always will be the way it has been for years, but I hope that people will understand what some people like me thinks about the schoolsystem and maybe change it a little bit. I don’t really have any problems with school, but I wished that we at least could have improved it a little bit to make it better adapted to everyone. Also we have to praise each persons individuality and learn children HOW to think, not WHAT to think, because it’s very individual what’s right and what’s wrong. What is wrong for one persons can be right for another one, so long it doesn’t affect anybody else in a bad way. So please continue educating people, but not affect them so much that they don’t have their own opinions anymore!
